Tuesday June 18 - Weather Update
Rain, rain, go away! I miss my Colorado Sunshine!
Yesterday was an active weather day. 3 tornadoes were reported in Eastern Colorado. Multiple large hail reports came in as well. Denver metro missed out on most of that but we got some rain out of the storms.
All of the rain and clouds this month have been good for keeping our soil nice and wet but it's also been holding our temperatures below average. The overall average temp for this month is running 1.2° below average already. We'll see if we can make up for that but with the pattern we've been in leaving and coming, we may only get back to average temps - which won't be a bad thing.
One more tidbit on temps, Denver typically hits 90° on June 10. We are clearly past that so when will it happen? Hopefully (for those who want the heat) in the next 2 weeks.
A lot of folks have been getting rain and a lot of it. Officially at DIA, they've reported .44" of rain. Downtown Denver is coming in right at .33" - which, both of these totals are below normal. We'll go with the 'official' records at DIA and say that as of now we are running about .75" below normal for rain. WITH THAT SAID, lots of places have picked up between 1-3" of rain so far this month. It just goes to show that the location of storms definitely matters. Regardless, we have time here in Denver to make up the lacking rain.
Another perspective to look at...which I like is comparing this year to last year. in 2018, Denver picked up a TOTAL of 8.50" of rain. This year to date total is 7.70" which means we only have .80" of precip to go before we see the same amount of precip at the ENTIRE year last year. Thanks to a former co-worker Chris Bianchi for sharing that fact!
Moving on to the current forecast. Here's the SUMMARY:

Alrighty, we got lots to talk about. Again.
After a wet and soggy start to the week, we have better weather to look forward to for Wednesday and Thursday. Both of those days will feature mainly sunny skies and temps in the mid-80s! Yas.
I'm watching an area of low pressure in Western Canada currently that is grabbing moisture from the Pacific and colder air from the north that will move into our area by Thursday night. This will mainly bring cloud cover and an isolated shower to the mountains for the day.
The front will push through Thursday to Friday which will play a role in our temps. Friday could be cooler with highs in the upper 70s but if the front moves through later in the day, we could see highs in the 80s. Rain will also begin to move into Denver by the end of the day. This will be the start of another soggy stretch of weather.
This weekend looks cooler and wet. Highs will struggle to break the 60s. Lower 70s if we're lucky. Rain will be pretty persistent. Rainfall totals are looking to be in the .75-2" range and that is looking rather widespread. Flooding could become a concern too. And while we are at it, might as well throw out the S word. Snow could fall in the higher elevations starting Friday and lasting through Sunday. I'm not worried about accumulations too much but above 11-12,000 feet, we could see a few inches fall! Not unheard of but definitely late in the season.
Once we make it to next week, we'll clear out. And it looks like a large ridge will move overhead bringing drier weather and heat! We could see our first 90° in Denver around the 26th of the month.
For now, watch for heavy rain and snowmelt issues this weekend.
